Terms of Use

Last updated: November 6, 2026

The rules of the service: your account, your content and what we can and cannot promise.

1. Who we are and what you are agreeing to

NoShelfControl is a social network for readers, published from Québec, Canada, and reachable at noshelfcontrol.ca. By creating an account or using the service you agree to these Terms of Use, to the Privacy Policy and to the Community Guidelines. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

You must be at least 14 years old to create an account. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you confirm that a parent or guardian has reviewed these terms with you.

2. Your account

You need an email address, a username and a password to join. Keep your password private: everything done from your account is your responsibility. Tell us right away at privacy@noshelfcontrol.ca if you think someone else has access to it.

Usernames are public. Do not pick one that impersonates another person or organisation, or that is offensive. We may rename or reclaim a username that breaks this rule.

3. Your content

Reviews, posts, comments, messages, shelves, club descriptions and profile photos that you add remain yours. You give NoShelfControl a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, display and distribute that content within the service so that it can work as a social network, for as long as you keep it on the service.

Only publish content you have the right to share. Short quotations from a book are fine in a review; copying whole chapters is not. Mark spoilers with the spoiler tool so that other readers can choose when to see them.

We can remove content that breaks these terms, the Community Guidelines or the law, and we can suspend or close accounts that do so repeatedly or seriously. When we can, we will tell you why.

4. Book data

Titles, authors, covers and descriptions come from Open Library and from the community. That data belongs to its respective owners and is provided as is: a wrong page count or a missing cover is not a defect of the service.

5. What the service is, and is not

NoShelfControl is offered free of charge and as is. We work hard to keep it available and accurate, but we cannot promise that it will always be online, error-free or that your content will never be lost. Keep a copy of anything you would hate to lose.

To the extent permitted by the laws of Québec and Canada, NoShelfControl and its operator are not liable for indirect damages, lost data or lost opportunities arising from your use of the service. Nothing in these terms limits rights that consumer protection law gives you and that cannot be waived.

6. Ending things

You can delete your account at any time by writing to privacy@noshelfcontrol.ca; we will remove your profile and personal data as described in the Privacy Policy. Content you shared in clubs and conversations may remain visible to the people it was shared with, without your name attached.

We may close the service or change what it offers. If we do, we will give reasonable notice on the service or by email.

7. Changes to these terms

When these terms change materially we will update the date at the top and ask you to accept the new version the next time you sign in. Continuing to use the service after that counts as acceptance.

8. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Québec and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute is heard by the courts of the judicial district of Montréal, unless the law gives you the right to sue elsewhere.
